Stakeholders discuss opportunities and challenges
Are tools and fundamentals mutually exclusive?:
"As a student it is not necessary for you to remember everything. (What is important is ) based on the fundamentals, how you can derive, where you can apply that: this is more important.
Everybody need not be very intelligent to remember each and every detail - provided the fundamentals are correct. The aproaches that I am observing, time and again, in education today is that fundamentals are given a second rung treatment as compared to what is called the "random" equations that are being used. When an equation is being used they do not know what that equation is, what it is used for, what its limitations are, and under what conditions that particular equation is correct.
At least, if you can make the student understand these concepts in a scientific fashion the education will probably become complete.
I for one feel, having 48 years experience in teaching, simply saying that a student "does not understand" or "will not be able to reply" is not necessary. This is because every student will not be competent to the same degree.
Given a situation, will the student be able to apply (the fundamentals)? Of course, with the vast disparity of the confidence levels of the students, from the best to the worst with 500 colleges coming into the picture. In some colleges the cream is present, in some colleges the absolute opposite is present!
