Panel Discussion - 18-July-2008, Hyderabad - At a gathering of faculty members, stakeholders in Engineering Services discuss different viewpoints - the framers of the curriculum, employers of graduate engineers, and owners of educational institutions. Lessons are also drawn from the IT industry, which has already experienced several of the problems that growth opportunities in high-technology services businesses bring.

Stakeholders discuss opportunities and challenges

thumbnail Mr.P.Balaji: As the Vice-President of the Andhra Pradesh Private Engineering Colleges Management Association, Secretary of the Shri Hanmantaraya Educational And Charitable Society, and the Secretary of the Vasavi Academy of Education, Mr.Balaji has an excellent perspective on the opportunities and motivations of the managements of Engineering Colleges.

Reviewing the points made by the other speakers - from curriculum trends of university-regulatory bodies to opportunities in the industry to quick-and-dirty projects, he recounts his experience with setting up specialised laboratories and providing value added courses to engineering undergraduates at the Vasavi College of Engineering. The "Core" Engineering Industry, he observes, is simply not able to attract engineering graduates the way the IT Business has done and continues to do.
